Main advantages
- A movie about a Non-playable-character in a videogame, that becomes somewhat sentient
- Great actor performances
- Good looking CGI
- Gaming jokes, easter eggs and cameos
Main disadvantages
- For non-gamers this movie might be complete nonsense
- Twitch streamer appearences, but thankfully only from their “streaming rooms via internet”

Every time that “Free Guy” threatens to become numbingly monotonous, a decision by writers Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, or one by Comer or Reynolds, brings it back into focus. “Free Guy” is more disposable than it should have been, but it’s a pleasant enough distraction. Free Guy review – Ryan Reynolds bounces through fun videogame existential crisis
It’s an undemanding and cheerfully silly riff on the themes of virtual reality and artificial intelligence, and what the heck we’re all doing in this big old universe of ours: as if someone took The Truman Show or Inception – or even The Lego Movie – and stripped out every serious satirical ambition, replacing it with M&M-coloured spectacle. Free Guy review: Ryan Reynolds is an AI on the loose in sweet screwball comedy
Though Free Guy is one of many projects completed well before the pandemic, its release now feels fortuitously in line with the Ted Lasso mood of the moment, and the general pivot from sneering antiheroes to more atypical ones — like a Guy so at ease in his masculinity that his sincere love of ’90s R&B songbirds and bubblegum ice cream can peacefully coexist with his action-man imperative to save the world and get the girl (who regularly, refreshingly, saves herself). In a genre where winky self-awareness has become standard-issue, Free might have come off as manic and hollow; instead, it has fun having a heart. Read full review…
